ACAM's goals are to improve physician skills, knowledge and diagnostic procedures and to develop public awareness of alternative methods of medical treatment.
The specific, formally-stated objectives of ACAM are:
Organization - To establish an organization composed of qualified physicians engaged in the furtherance of the practice of medicine or medical research in emerging and innovative fields of medical therapy and preventive medicine.
Purpose - To promote and advance any innovative and emerging therapies and areas of preventive medicine that offer to aid health and prevent illness.
Research - To advance, support, and assist the research of sound innovative therapies and preventive medical measures.
Education - To encourage and promote greater interest and to further the education of practicing physicians in the application of sound innovative therapies and preventive measures. To conduct educational sessions as authorized by the Board of Directors to meet the needs of the membership.
Other Groups - To cooperate with other medical organizations with related objectives in both the United States and other countries.
Publications - To sponsor and support publications and published proceedings on sound innovative therapies and preventive measures.
Standards of Practice - To maintain and promote the highest standards of practice and to establish protocols containing professionally recognized standards of practice where proper and applicable.
CERTIFICATION OF ACAM PHYSICIANS ADMINISTERING EDTA CHELATION THERAPY Most ACAM physicians administer EDTA chelation therapy, a medical procedure involving intravenous infusion of a man-made amino acid (ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid), to treat atherosclerosis and other chronic degenerative diseases. The American Board of Chelation Therapy in Chicago, Illinois provides two levels of certification for physicians who have met the criteria listed below:
DIPLOMATE (DIPL) a. is a graduate of an approved school of medicine
(D.O. or M.D., or foreign equivalent);
b. is currently licensed to practice in the state or territory where he/she
conducts practice;
c. has been recommended (by letter) by two Diplomates in Chelation Therapy;
d. has successfully completed the written examination of the American Board
of Chelation Therapy;
e. shows evidence of being responsible for the administration of 1000 chelation
treatments;
f. has satisfied the requirements for preceptor training as outlined in
the protocol of preceptorship;
g. has successfully completed the oral examination of the American Board
of Chelation Therapy;
h. submits 10 acceptable questions and answers with references for use in
future written exams.
DIPLOMATE CANDIDATE (D/C) a. is a graduate of an approved school
of medicine (D.O. or M.D. or foreign equivalent);
b. is currently licensed to practice in the state or territory where he/she
conducts practice;
c. has been recommended (by letter) by two Diplomates in Chelation Therapy;
d. has successfully completed the written examination of the American Board
of Chelation Therapy;
and is in the process of completing the remaining requirements for ABCT
Diplomate status.
ACAM FELLOW (FACAM) The designation of FACAM after the physician's name indicates that he is a Fellow of the American College for Advancement in Medicine and signifies special contributions both to preventive medicine and to ACAM. Fellows must have attended ACAM's chelation therapy workshop and passed the ABCT written exam, met specified medical/scientific writing requirements, provided service to ACAM, attended at least four ACAM conference programs, and been an ACAM member in good standing for a minimum of two years.
